Last Day For City Pub

A long familiar public house will soon disappear from the Nottingham scene. The Eight Bells, St. Peter's Gate, closes today and is to be demolished. But it will live on for a long time yet, and not only in the minds of its regular customers.
The interior of the Eight Bells has been reproduced at Twickenham Studios, where Woodfall Productions are making a film of 'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning,' from the novel by Nottingham author Alan Sillitoe.
Mr Sillitoe sampled a pint of beer at the studio pub last week, and then heard that the real Eight Bells is closing. He made a trip to Nottingham from his London home for a last drink there, and here he is seen (right) in the saloon bar with the landlord, Mr Percy Landen, who is moving to the White Hind, at Newark.
