The people in this photograph are men who have joined the National Fire Service which came into being in August 1941. The distinctive features are the badges on the tunics and the double breasted coats that they are wearing are those issued by the NFS. Photograph taken on Triumph Road at some spot on the gasometer side of the road, while in the background are two of Players' bonded warehouses.
We can now name one of the men. Standing on the top row on the extreme left is Francis Michael O'Brien, who lived at 29 Broad Oak Street, Nottingham. Michael was born in Carrick on Suir in 1903 and came to the United Kingdom via the USA. He was based at Triumph Road from 1942 to 1945 although in 1943 he spent a short time at Grimsby working for the National Fire Service. [Information supplied by his son - David O'Brien]
