Harrison's Hairdressers 1936. Left to right - Cecil Harrison, Peggy Renshaw, Elijah Harrison and Clarence Collinson. The Abbey Street premises were pulled down in the early 1980s.
Interior of Harrison's Abbey Street Hairdressers - Date unknown. At this time the shop was owned by Gordon Harrison, who is featured in most of the photographs. The photographs in this set of 6 have been kindly donated by Linda Colbourn (nee Harrison). For more information about the photographs and Abbey Street Hairdressers, see Memories below. |
For those of you who remember Harrison's Hairdressers in Old Lenton, I thought I would let you know that Edith Harrison (wife of the late Gordon) died recently [2012]. Harrison's had been established on Abbey Street since 1919 when it was started by my grandfather, Elijah Harrison, and continued until my uncle Gordon's death in 1982.

The first picture on this page shows my grandfather Elijah and my father Cecil pictured outside 32 Abbey Street, the Harrison's hairdressing shop in the 1930s.
The other photographs show my uncle Gordon Harrison. He took over the salon on the death of my grandfather Elijah Harrison. I don't remember the name of the young man in the photo with Gordon (centre photograph, middle row), I think it may have been Graham? Does anyone recognise him?
A member of the Harrison family carried on the hairdressing tradition here until 1981 with the death of my uncle Gordon Harrison. I have lots of memories of the shop, and in fact lived there with my uncle and his wife Edith for a few years in the 1960s!
I'm still researching the Abbey Street Hairdressers and would love to hear from anyone who has any old photographs or postcards of the hairdressers or terrace. Any further information you have would be gratefully received.
