Peter Holland took this shot of Hungerton Street in 1978. The properties on the right came down in the early 1980s. |
This May 2003 shot shows the same view as the previous photograph. The land to the right, where the buildings in the 1978 photo had stood, is now used for a set of lock-up garages. |
A 1978 view of Hungerton Street taken from Abbey Bridge. Little physical change has taken place to the properties shown here although the old tin chapel just visible behind the Hungerton Street properties was recently demolished to make way for a student accommodation block. |
The western side of Hungerton Street used to be the base for a row of small commercial premises. The site of these was cleared in about 2003 and this block of housing erected in their place. Our photograph, taken in November 2004, shows the properties nearing completion. |
This 1959 photo, supplied by Gordon Jackson, shows a young Gordon and his father on Hungerton Street. Part of the buildings on the left can still be seen in our 2004 photographs, but have now been painted an orange/red colour. |
This block of retail units is situated at the junction of Hungerton Street and Sherwin Road. Photograph taken in May 2004. |
On the 2nd July 2012 the ITV news team brought cameras to film a fire that had broken out on Hungerton Street. The fire had started in a garage repair unit located within one of the arches of the bridgework carrying Abbey Bridge over the railway line. These six photographs subsequently featured on a page on the ITV news website. The garage repair unit was badly damaged by the fire and the Council chose to demolish the unit and simply left the open bridge work suitably fenced off. |
