A shot of the Medical School block viewed from Clifton Boulevard. Photograph probably taken c. 1972. |
A 2005 view of the service road running in front of the northern side of the QMC, photograph taken from Clifton Boulevard. |
This new block, housing the Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Centre, was added to the eastern side of the hospital complex. This photograph, taken in 2001 shows the building shortly after completion. |
The new Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Centre on the left and on the right the hospital's multistorey car park on the right. Photograph also taken in July 2001. |
A view of the River Leen in 2001 as it flows past the QMC complex. The road bridge seen in the photograph connects Leen Gate with the rear of the hospital. Also visible is the multistorey carpark, now demolished. |
A view of the River Leen probably taken at the beginning of the 1980s following a period of heavy rain which caused the river to swell in size. It looks as though it wouldn't have taken much more water before it came over the top and flowed into the hospital complex - although it never did! |
A 2005 shot of the Postgraduate Centre and Trent Stimulation and Skills Centre. |
The same building as in the previous photograph but from a slightly different angle. Although it was only taken in August 2005 this has already become an historic shot in that the white building in the background which housed the squash courts have since been demolished to make way for the Day Surgery Centre. |
For this 2008 shot we are back on the Abbey Street bridge looking along the banks of the River Leen. The Day Surgery centre constructed in 2006/7 now fills the left hand side of the photograph. |
Taken at the same time as the previous photograph the new Day Surgery Centre is just out of view off to the left. The Abbey Street petrol station is on the right although it has long since ceased to sell petrol and the site is currently [2011] used for one of those car washing/valetting services that have sprung up all over the place in recent years. In the distance the hospital's multistorey carpark is still on the scene although this has since been demolished and replaced with surface carparking. |
The demise of the Nurse's Homes on the QMC Site - 2003/2004 & 2011
This and the following four photographs were taken in the summer of 2003. They show a portion of the residential complex undergoing demolition. In the foreground is Curie Court and behind this is Cavell Court and beyond both of these is the Medical School block. |
A close-up of Curie Court shortly before the demolition men began to move in. |
The demolition firm 'Total Reclaims' displays its involvement on the gable end of Galen Court. |
One of the residential blocks no longer occupied and awaiting demolition. |
What was once home for various nursing and medical staff is now little more than a heap of rubble. |
Taken in May 2004 this shot shows the extra carparking area that has been created following the demolition of the properties shown in the previous photographs. |
The same section of carpark as shown in the previous photograph but the year is now 2011. In the distance demolition is underway on what remains of the original portion of the 'residential' complex built when the hospital first opened. |
The same stretch of carpark in 2011 but with Clifton Boulevard in the background. |
A close up of the demolition site in 2011 with the Dunkirk Flyover in the background. |
Once the demolition crew had completed their work on the western half of the residential complex they moved across to the eastern portion. This 2004 photo, looking across from Abbey Street, reveals that the next phase of the demolition programme has now been completed and only the resulting rubble waits to be taken away. |
One year later (August 2005) and the site of the former nurses homes remains unused. However the hospital has now revealed its plans for the site so we can expect to see developments taking place in the not too distant future. |
Just to complete this sequence of three photographs. The same view in 2008 but with the Day Surgery Centre now in situ. |
