Past Floods
The image on this picture postcard was taken from a plane on 24th May 1932 and given away that same day with the Nottingham Evening News. It shows how Grove Farm, accessed via Trent Lane [now renamed Lenton Lane] was affected when the River Trent burst its banks. |
March 1947: The junction of Abbey Street and Gregory Street. The horse and cart confidently makes its way through the floodwater whereas the driver of Jesse Robinson's lorry clearly has problems. |
An undated photograph probably taken in the 1960s. It shows the River Trent in flood at Clifton Bridge. |
The junction of Cloister Street and Dunkirk Road after the banks of the River Leen had overflown. We have no exact date for this photograph but think it was probably taken c.1980. |

This sequence of Lenton flood photographs focuses on the junction of Gregory Street and Abbey Bridge. Our first shot has the building which used to house the County headquarters of the Red Cross in the background. |
This second photograph shows the floods looking along Gregory Street out towards Lenton Lane. |
Our third shot has an ambulance valliantly trying to negotiate its way through the floodwater seemingly with the help of some of the younger members of the local community. |
The wall of the churchyard of Priory Church is off to the right in this shot with Friary Place and the Red Cow public house visible in the background. |
Our final shot shows the floodwater extending into the churchyard. |

Following very heavy rain the underground 'surface water' drain that ran through Lenton was sometimes unable to cope with the volume of water passing through it causing water to well up on to the road and flood this portion of Old Lenton. This shot shows the view taken from Abbey Street looking towards The White Hart. |
The view looking more directly along Gregory Street, with Leengate going off to the left in the middle distance. This sequence of photographs was taken by Paul Bexon, who ruined a perfectly good pair of shoes in order to capture the occasion on film. |
Two of the employees from Sauna 32 come out of their premises on Gregory Street to survey the dramatic scene. |
Much of the traffic was usually wise enough to take another route through Lenton. What you see here are the few exceptions trying to gain access to Abbey Street or the other portion of Gregory Street. |
The junction of Leengate and Gregory Street. Here one unfortunate driver seeks further assistance from obliging passers-by as he tries to negotiate this section of Gregory Street. |
Another view of Gregory Street with some of the St. Anthony's Court properties visible in the background. |
Looking back along Gregory Street towards its junction with Leengate, with Forsythia Gardens situated to the left of the photograph. |
Back at the junction of Gregory Street and Abbey Street with the Priory Park across the road and the 'spire' of the Priory Church just visible on the skyline. |
The view looking along Abbey Street. The buildings in the far distance were used by the Greater Nottingham Co-operative Society to house their Works Department. Since then these buildings have been demolished and the site is now used as a car park for people working at the Queens Medical Centre. |
